Viewing of the PBS Documentary Latino Americans. One hundred years after Columbus’ arrival in the Caribbean, Spanish Conquistadors and Priests, push into North America in search of gold and to spread Catholicism. With the arrival of the British in North America, the two colonial systems produce contrasting societies that come in conflict as Manifest Destiny pushes the U.S into the Mexican territories of the South West. This event is part of the Celebrating Latino Americans programming.

We welcome acclaimed writers Leila Abdelrazaq and Toufic El Rassi to Moraine Valley for this special event. Leila Abdelrazaq is the author of the graphic novel Baddawi which is the story of a young Palestinian boy named Ahmad who is struggling to find his place in the world. Toufic El Rassi is the author of the graphic novel Arab in America which is the story of average Arab-Americans who struggle with their identity in a post-9/11 world.

Celina Villanueva, from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, will discuss immigration issues in the Chicago region and across Illinois. She will present a regional view of this national view and consider how state and local policy impacts the lives of those arriving from abroad. This event is part of the One Book, One College program.
