Student FAQ: Commonly Asked Questions about limited access to Library services

I have items checked out from the library, what should I do?

All of your items have been renewed through May 26. You can check your library account to view the items still checked out to you. We will be monitoring the situation knowing that we may need to adjust due dates. You can return items (not laptops or other technology) in the book drop outside of the L Building. Please keep electronics to return in person when the library re-opens. 

Can I still get help from a librarian?

Yes! Librarians are available to answer questions and help with research. The best ways to contact us are by chat, email, or text. Chat and text will be monitored during our hours of operation. (Check our hours page to keep current.) Email us anytime and we will answer during the weekday. Visit the Ask A Librarian page. You can call us 8am-5pm Mon-Fri (with limited availability nights and weekends) at 708-974-5234.

Can I still check out books from the library?

Physical paper copies are not available, however the library offers many e-book options. You can Ask A Librarian for help locating e-books or search the library catalog. For more about additional e-books and e-audio books please visit our e-book database page.  

Can I still check out a laptop, textbook, graphing calculator, or anatomy model to take home?

No. Our physical collections (including technology) are currently unavailable since we are closed. Here are some alternatives:

How can I find an electronic article for my research?

You can search for articles through our online databases.  If you need help, Ask a Librarian for help. 

What are the library hours?

While the physical library is closed, we will have librarians online ready to answer your questions or work with you. The library hours can be found here.   

If the Library is closed, how will I return items that I have borrowed?

You may place items in the Library’s outdoor book drop outside the north entrance to the L building facing 107th street. Please do not put electronics in the drop box and return these once you are able to return to campus. 

Are Interlibrary loans still available?

Interlibrary Loan will not be receiving or requesting items from other libraries. Items currently checked out to students, staff, and faculty have automatically had their due dates extended until May 26. For questions about Interlibrary Loan, contact Sue Yach: yach@morainevalley.edu

Can I access material my instructor put on physical reserve without entering the library?

No, all physical reserve items must be checked out at the circulation desk at the front of the library.

How will you share information about the Library and Campus re-openings?

Official information about campus closures and re-openings will be sent by the College through email. Information will also be shared via the college and library’s social media feeds.  

How can I get a device to do my classwork from Moraine Valley?

At this time all available devices have been checked out. 

Do you have Wi-Fi hotspots to check out?

Unfortunately, the Library has checked out all of the available hotspots and there are not any left for checkout. 

I checked out a device from the T building on Monday, March 23. When is it due and how do I return it?

Your device (iPad or Laptop) is due on May 22, 2020. You will return your device to the library at this time. If the library opens prior to May 22, you will have the opportunity to return it earlier. Please do not return your device in the library drop box. You MUST return this item in person. If you do not return your device you will be billed for the full cost of that item.
