Student FAQ: Commonly Asked Questions about limited access to Library services

I have items checked out from the library, what should I do?

All of your general collection items, (books, magazines, DVDs and CDs) have been renewed through August 31. This does not include electronics, please see your MVCC email if you have electronic materials checked out. You can check your library account to view the items still checked out to you. We will be monitoring the situation knowing that we may need to adjust due dates. You can return items (not laptops or other technology) in the book drop outside of the L Building. Please keep electronics to return in person when the library re-opens. See FAQ item below for campus iPad and laptop return dates.

I checked out an iPad or Laptop from the college. When is it due and how do I return it?

If you ARE registered for Summer or Fall Semester Classes by May 15, you will not be required to return your electronic devices at this time and your due date will be automatically extended. Your registration for classes must be processed by May 15 for this accommodation. Further information will be emailed regarding late summer due dates and drop off locations for these devices for those registered for Summer or Fall classes.

To return any electronic device, please coordinate a pickup time by emailing circulation@morainevalley.edu. They will arrange a day and time to off items at the 107th St. side of the L building.

You may still return any print (non-electronic) materials in the library book drop in front of the L building at your convenience.

I need to return a Math Department graphing calculator, what do I do?

We will be taking returned Math Department Calculators. If a student has a math department calculator they checked out for the semester, they can return them on any curbside electronic date, or in the library book drop in the front of the L building.

Can I still get help from a librarian?

Yes! Librarians are available to answer questions and help with research. The best ways to contact us are by chat, email, or text. Chat and text will be monitored during our hours of operation. (Check our hours page to keep current.) Email us anytime and we will answer during the weekday. Visit the Ask A Librarian page. You can call us 8am-5pm Mon-Fri (with limited availability nights and weekends) at 708-974-5234.

Can I still check out books from the library?

Beginning on June 1, 2020, the Library will offer curbside pick up for physical materials from the library. You will be able to place a hold on general collection materials and our circulation department will coordinate a pick up time with you.  Textbook and reserve collection materials will not be eligible for this service. For more information, visit this guide.

  • Curbside pick ups are by appointment only on Tuesday, and Thursday between the hours of 10-4pm.
  • Students/Staff will be contacted by a library staff member after making a request.
  • Library staff will make sure requested items are available and schedule a pick up day and time.
  • Students & staff will be asked to verify their identity by either presenting their student id or driver’s license/state ID at time of pick up.
  • Please note that all campus buildings are closed so there is no access to the Library.  All pickups must be by appointment.

If you would like to request an item, you can contact a librarian via our Ask A Librarian chat service, email, or by phone. Please be prepared to provide your name, contact information, student id#, and the item information. The item will not be available to pickup unless a circulation staff member confirms a date and time for pickup with you.

Can I still check out a textbook, graphing calculator, or anatomy model to take home?

No. Our physical collections (including technology) are currently unavailable since we are closed. Here are some alternatives:

How can I find an electronic article for my research?

You can search for articles through our online databases.  If you need help, Ask a Librarian for help.

What are the library hours?

While the physical library is closed, we will have librarians online ready to answer your questions or work with you. The library hours can be found here.

If the Library is closed, how will I return items that I have borrowed?

You may place items in the Library’s outdoor book drop outside the north entrance to the L building facing 107th street. Please do not put electronics in the drop box and return these once you are able to return to campus.

Are Interlibrary loans still available?

Interlibrary Loan materials can be ordered on our ILL Order page. Items currently checked out to students, staff, and faculty have automatically had their due dates extended until August 31st. For questions about Interlibrary Loan, contact Sue Yach: yach@morainevalley.edu

Can I access material my instructor put on physical reserve without entering the library?

No, all physical reserve items must be checked out at the circulation desk at the front of the library.

How will you share information about the Library and Campus re-openings?

Official information about campus closures and re-openings will be sent by the College through email. Information will also be shared via the college and library’s social media feeds.

How can I get an iPad to do my classwork from Moraine Valley?

Students that are currently enrolled for Summer 2020 courses can obtain an iPad for coursework.  Students must fill out the online iPad Loan Agreement Form. Once the student submits the form, a pickup date (one of the offered curbside library dates) will be coordinated by the library when the device has been prepared by IT.

Do you have Wi-Fi hotspots to check out?

Unfortunately, the Library has checked out all of the available hotspots and there are not any left for checkout.

How do I find information about campus services?

For information on campus services (tutoring, bookstore, Advising, etc) visit the college's Covid Preparedness for Students page (student or staff login required). This includes the latest campus updates and an FAQ for each area of campus.
